Profiling the perfect crisis manager

Handling a crisis can test the hardiest individual. What are the essential qualities needed for such a job?

  • Must exhibit integrity, credibility and compassion

  • Have confidence in their abilities

  • May need to show contrition if that’s appropriate

  • Sometimes sorry really is the hardest word

  • A team player, someone who doesn’t work in a silo

  • Good communication skills

  • Ability to disentangle the impacts from the facts

  • Ability to identify and prioritise tasks that need to be undertaken

  • Able to cope with a huge workload

  • Ability to assimilate a great deal of information

  • And to filter out the facts that matter and those that don’t

  • An understanding of what essential information is missing and where to go to find it
